Back Pain at Work: What the Data Tells Us

A recent survey from Fellowes UK has put the spotlight on a serious issue in today's workplace: the lack of proper ergonomic setups and the impact this has on employee wellbeing.

After speaking with over 1,000 UK office workers, the findings are clear: just one in three believe their employer gets the basics right when it comes to desk ergonomics and worker health. Even more concerning, over 25% said their workplace has never conducted a workstation risk assessment.

“UK businesses have a duty of care towards their employees’ wellbeing,” said Darryl Brunt, Fellowes UK Sales & Marketing Director. “Workstation risk assessments are essential for ensuring employees are comfortable and properly supported.”

The Pain Points

The numbers speak volumes:

  • 56% of workers report back pain while seated at their desks
  • 42% believe additional back support would ease discomfort
  • 1 in 5 office workers experience pain during everyday movements, and some rely on regular pain relief
  • Those aged 35–44 are most likely to take time off due to workstation-related injuries

It's not just office spaces under scrutiny. Hybrid workers also struggle:

  • 21% work from any available surface, while 19% are stationed on the sofa
  • Nearly 60% of home-based workers cite back pain as their biggest issue

Despite this, only 22% of employees say their employer has invested in appropriate ergonomic equipment. The good news? Of those who received support, 89% reported improvements in physical wellbeing, motivation, and productivity.
